The impact of this on our family has been traumatic to say the least
Some of you already know this, but my Dad suffered a massive stroke on 29th June this year. He was cooking dinner at the time and it happened without any warning.
Dad was a fit, active, happy 74 year old, who was still working and living life to the full. He had been skiing earlier in the year and even went clubbing in Ibiza! He was also a fantastic father for as many years as I care to remember. And for most of his career, he worked in Financial Services.
He is now totally dependent, wheel-chair bound and with significant brain damage. Sadly he has no memory at all of his life before his stroke and communication is extremely difficult which is the thing he finds most depressing.
Dad ran two London Marathons for charity over the years and I am now going to follow in his footsteps and raise money for The Stroke Association which is the only UK wide charity solely concerned with combating stroke in people of all ages. I also hope that my efforts will raise awareness of this terrible condition which is the third biggest killer in the UK and can happen at any age.
I have been very lucky to have been offered the opportunity to run the 2012 London Marathon for The Stroke Association. I have only ever run 6 miles at any one time before so this is going to be quite a challenge for me. I hope to write a short update here each day of my training, of current news and views about stroke and how we can do more to avoid it happening to us and our loved ones and about my Dad’s progress.
I have created a Just Giving page which you can find at http://www.justgiving.com/SarahCalvert666. Any donation from IFA Life members is welcome, large or small - it all makes a difference.
I also hope to organise a couple of fund raising events, namely a comedy night and a Quiz Night the like of which you have never seen before. Seriously! If you would like to come along to either of these with a bunch of friends or family please let me know and I will keep you informed of dates.
The effect of Stroke on our family has been traumatic and we miss Dad's presence in our lives hugely. Any donation you can make to help me reach my target for the Stroke Association will be hugely appreciated.
With best wishes and thank you. Here's the link again http://www.justgiving.com/SarahCalvert666
