Terms & Conditions

1. General Terms and Conditions

Since the IFA Life online 'Club' was formed in 2004, we've not had to remove a single post in the Forum due to defamatory or disrespectful behaviour online. The overwhelming majority of IFA Life members use the Forum in a friendly, respectful and professional manner to share best practice, ask questions, exchange ideas, network with each other, debate industry issues, provide help and support to one another and to enhance their profile and reputation.

We hope to keep it that way, but please read these important points.

2. Acceptable Use and Code of Conduct

Whilst comments in the IFA Life Forum are monitored and moderated, we have rarely had to edit or remove posts. We believe there should be a balanced representation of views, but we don't like outbreaks of ranting, trolling or arguments as this spoils the enjoyment and value of the site for others.

IFA Life will not allow disputes to be played out between members in the Forum area, or indeed disputes between members and past employers or business partners. We will not hesitate to close or remove posts and block members at our sole discretion and without warning.

Robust debate is healthy and valuable, but please keep all interactions friendly and respectful. Be aware that everything you post on IFA Life can be seen and read by other members - which means that what you write goes towards establishing and influencing your professional reputation. What you write in the Forum cannot be seen by non members or be indexed by Google or other search engines.

Posts which potentially defame or call into question the integrity of other members, companies or past employers/business partners will be removed at our sole discretion. Posts which link to websites, blogs or articles which defame or are highly critical of others may also be removed.

Forum posts/messages which add value to other members always go a long way towards enhancing reputations and to building the perception of your expertise. Posts and messages which are rude, offensive and attack others do exactly the opposite and may be removed.

Please remember that other people have their own opinions on subjects, so allow them to have and express their point of view. Having a strong view on a subject will not necessarily mean that a post will be removed or the author blocked from using the site, but argumentative and rude behaviour may lead to one or the other or both. Challenge authors of posts by all means, but do not harass, abuse, defame, be rude or cause distress.

Do not Spam the IFA Life Forum or Articles section with sales messages. Please do not add multiple identical posts throughout the different sections of the Forum or they will be removed. If you wish to post advertisements, please do so on your profile page or contact IFA Life for a range of commercial options.

IFA Life operates a football style yellow and red card system. The referee, players and crowd want a free-flowing and exciting game, but the referee reserves the right to send someone off the pitch without warning.

The views expressed by members in the Forum are theirs alone and do not reflect those of IFA Life - neither does IFA Life vouch for the accuracy, completeness or usefulness of Forum posts. You are responsible for the accuracy of your own remarks and for checking accuracy if acting upon someone else's remarks, advice and comments.

3. Unacceptable Material and Complaints

IFA Life will not accept any posts which are racist, unethical, illegal, threatening, obscene, vulgar, hateful, knowingly false, inaccurate, sexually oriented, invasive of a person's privacy or which attack religious beliefs. We will remove posts in the Forum entirely at our own discretion and reserve the right not to enter into correspondence about it.

If you find a Forum post which is objectionable and which appears to go against the conditions outlined here, you are encouraged to contact, and if necessary complain to IFA Life by email (see address below). If, at entirely our own discretion we determine that the complaint is justified, we will remove the Forum post at the earliest opportunity.

If you believe a post on the site makes factually incorrect comments about another member or about yourself and/or their/your services, you are encouraged to post clarification and/or contact the person making the comments and request that they add additional remarks of clarification or request that they contact IFA Life to remove their original comments.

3.1 Where a Forum is sponsored by a Provider of products and/or services to IFAs, IFA Life reserves the right to remove posts by other Providers of similar products and services which in our sole opinion appear to compete with the products and services of the forum sponsor. Please also read point 6 below regarding advertising and promotion of products and services.

3.2 Where a Forum is sponsored by a Provider of products and/or services to IFAs, IFA Life may remove posts by any user of the site when requested to do so by the sponsor (or their representatives). For example, this may include defamatory remarks about the sponsor and/or their products/services, posts about competitive products/services or posts which, at the sole discretion of the sponsor are deemed innapropriate for inclusion in their sponsored forum.

3.3 Unfair comments and posts

The nature of the IFA Life website is that financial adviser members share best practice, discuss industry issues, share resources and provide help and support to one another within a friendly and professional environment.

This may from time to time include sharing experiences of working with various product and service providers, and may include highlighting positive and negative experiences.

Where an adviser member expresses opinions on products, services and providers that they have used, we expect them to be fair, reasonable and truthful. We do not allow them to post comments or opinions which are malicious or fabricated, and in such circumstances, we will remove them, edit them or request clarification if they prove to be unfounded comments. If necessary we may request that an apology is posted.

Where an adviser member purely recounts an experience or expresses an opinion on the service they have received from a provider, provided that opinion is not malicious or fabricated, our policy is not to remove the post, as its comment may assist other advisers who are seeking such opinions to enable them to make business decisions.

Where an adviser member has posted such an experience or opinion, and where we are satisfied that it is fair, truthful and not intended to be malicious, we hope and expect that provider members will engage with the post in order to clarify the issue raised. Under no circumstances will we allow providers to threaten or harrass members who are sharing such experiences and opinions. Where we have found this to have taken place, the provider account will be deleted immediately.

IFA Life takes no responibility for the comments made by adviser members, though we do strongly encourage adviser members to be fair, responsible and truthful in recounting their experiences and opinions. Accounts where comments and posts prove to be malicious or fabricated will be deleted at our sole discretion and without notice.

4. Copyright Material

You must not post copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or by IFA Life. If you refer to articles, blogs or comments in copyright material (which includes websites), please always include details of the source or a link to the source. For very long URL links, we suggest you use a URL shortening tool such as TinyURL (http://tinyurl.com/).

IFA/Financial Adviser members should be aware that financial services journalists may also use the IFA Life website. If journalists wish to use forum comments that have been made by IFA/Financial Adviser members, they should first request permission. (Please see 7. Press, Media and Journalists below.)

5. Links to Third Party Websites

IFA Life includes hyperlinks to websites which are operated by parties other than IFA Life. Such hyperlinks are provided for your reference only. IFA Life does not control such Web sites and is not responsible for their content. IFA Life's inclusion of hyperlinks to other websites does not imply any endorsement of the material on other websites or any association with their operators. Members follow links to other websites at their own risk and IFA Life accepts no responsibility for loss as a result of your use of such websites.

The IFA Life website also includes advertisements from a range of product and service providers. IFA Life's inclusion of advertisements with hyperlinks to other websites does not imply any endorsement of the products and services advertised. Neither can IFA Life vouch for the accuracy of such advertisements, and members take up the products/services advertised at their own risk. IFA Life accepts no responsibility for loss as a result of your purchase or use of such products and services.

If you believe an advertisement or article on IFA Life to be factually incorrect or misleading, please contact the advertiser in teh first instance, copying in IFA Life at admin@ifalife.com.

Members of IFA Life may include external links within their profiles, articles, Forum posts and advertisements. Members found to be linking to obscene, pornographic, racist or sites that might resonably considered to be objectionable may have their content removed or account closed without warning.

Members posting articles in the Articles section should not include multiple anchor text links to external websites for SEO (search engine optimisation) purposes. IFA Life will remove such links at its sole discretion.

6. Industry Providers, Recruiters, Suppliers, Journalists/Press, Regulators and other Industry Professionals

6.1 Providers, Recruiters, Suppliers, Journalists/Press, Regulators and other Industry Professionals [collectively referred to as 'Providers'] to IFAs are welcome to join the site and are encouraged to post Articles and Blogs on the IFA Life website, and to comment on existing Blogs, Articles and messages in the Forum without charge, provided they are generic and add value.

Providers wishing to post anything of a promotional or commercial nature (i.e. promoting products, services and jobs etc) should contact IFA Life for a range of advertising opportunities (see 6.1 below).

6.2 As part of a forum conversation, a Provider may make brief reference to a product or service that may help or add value to the context of a thread. However we will remove or edit at our sole discretion and without warning Providers' comments which are overt, clear and obvious promotional messages. If in doubt, please contact admin@ifalife.com prior to posting.

6.3 IFA and Financial Adviser members add their contact details to their IFA Life profile pages in good faith. Whilst Provider members may use the information provided for normal ad hoc day-to-day communications, they may not be used for the purposes of 'harvesting' email addresses and bulk promotions. Providers identified through our systems as collecting multiple email addresses for the purposes of emailing or bulk contacting IFA and Financial Adviser members may be blocked from the site without warning.

6.4 Provider accounts must be listed as a named individual and should not show the name of the company in the name/last name section of the profile page. A provider's name may be shown in the Company name/address and About Me sections. If a company name is shown in the name/lastname section it will be deleted.

6.4.1 Provider accounts must not include a logo or other promotional image in the profile photograph section, though they may include a logo in the logo section. IFA Life reserves the right to remove profile images that do not show a photograph of the named individual.

7. Press, Media and Journalists

IFA Life allows journalists to join the site as 'Press/Media' members, where they may post requests for case studies and information to help them prepare stories and articles for their publications. When requesting such information, they should log in and use this forum.

If a Press/Media member wishes to use a comment made by an IFA/Financial Adviser member which has been made in any of the IFA Life forums, that Press/Media member should out of courtesy request permission to use the comment from the IFA/Financial Adviser member before using it in a story/article for their publication.

When permission has been given, Press/Media members should reference the comments as having been made in the IFA Life forum. IFA Life reserves the right to block the account of any journalist or Press/Media member who uses material on IFA Life without first asking permission and referencing IFA Life.

8. Membership

As a condition of your use of this Web site, you warrant to IFA Life that you will not use this website for any purpose that is unlawful or prohibited by these Terms and Conditions.

When joining, we request that you provide your correct and full name, though we do not insist on it if confidentiality is required - for example if looking for career information and options when considering leaving your current employment.

Accounts on IFA Life which are believed to be false, dishonest, deliberately misleading or which give incomplete names may be removed without notice.

Accounts which misrepresent an adviser's independence, regulatory status, qualifications, professional standing, membership of industry bodies or how they are remunerated will be removed and may also be reported to the appropriate regulatory authorities.

We strongly advise members to regularly check that the information provided on their profile page is correct and up to date. Where it is found to be innacurate or potentially misleading, IFA Life will write to the member concerned inviting them to correct any errors. If the member fails to respond within a reasonable timeframe, we reserve the right to block or delete the profile without warning.

In exceptional circumstances (e.g. where a member has been banned from regulated activity), we reserve the right to block or delete their profile without warning.

If you wish your account profile name to be confidential and would prefer to use a pseudonym, please contact us to advise us accordingly to admin@ifalife.com. Users adopting pseudonyms without prior agreement may be blocked or deleted at our sole discretion and without notice.

However, please note that given the nature of Social Networking websites - forum comments, blog posts and articles by members who are known to be using a pseudonym but who do not adopt our best practice guidelines below, can on occasion be unsettling to other members - and where, in our sole opinion a member appears to be abusing their confidential status, we will not hesitate to block them from using the site. We may also record their IP address and pass it to the relevant authorities in the event that trolling or abusive beahviour is suspected.

Experience has shown that where posting a question or comment in the Forum, it is good practice for members using a pseudonym to state this at the beginning of their post. We strongly encourage any member using a pseudonym to adopt this practice.

Providers and Suppliers joining IFA Life should also give the name of the individual joining in addition to their company name. Profiles in the name of a company only, which do not provide a named individual may be removed without notice.

You expressly understand and agree that IFA Life shall not be liable to you for any direct or indirect use of the IFA Life website or services, including without limitation any failure of performance, error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorised access to, alteration of, or use of records, whether for breach of contract, tortuous behaviour, negligence, or under any other cause or action.

You agree to indemnify and hold IFA Life and its subsidiaries, affiliates, agents, co-branders or other partners and employees, harmless from any claim or demand, including reasonable legal fees, made by any IFA Life member or third party due to or arising out of content you submit, post, transmit or make available through the IFA Life website or on any site that chooses to link to or display the content, your use of the IFA Life website, your connection to the IFA Life website, your violation of these terms and conditions, or your violation of any rights of another.

You also agree that IFA Life may use or reprint your public profile page for occasional use in marketing materials, presentations and promotions (e.g. exhibitions). If you do not agree to this, please contact us and your profile will not be used in this way.

IFA Life is owned and operated by IFA Life Limited, and is operated as a for-profit trading enterprise, managed by the Directors in order to make a financial return for its shareholders.

IFA Life reserves the right to change the terms, conditions and notices under which this website is offered without notice. By using IFA Life, you are accepting these conditions. If you do not agree with them, please do not participate in any way or post any material in the Forum or Articles area. Please contact us and we will remove your account and profile.
