About Me

Established in 2000, Thornton Associates is the Isle of Man's first firm of Chartered financial planners.

We provide a real client-focussed ongoing service that helps clients, whether you are a private individual, trustee or small business owner, to get what they want; ideally for helping them identify, achieve and maintain their desired lifestyle without ever running out of money. That is what we, as financial planners do best.

Working to the highest ethical and professional standards, we provide the independent financial advice you need to you make informed decisions about your income options at every stage of your financial life.

Our specialist area is providing advice to clients with multijurisdictional backgrounds and being based in an offshore location with strong international links, gives us an edge.

I founded Thornton Associates Ltd in 2000 and also have the distinction of being the first advanced diploma holder (APFS) and Chartered Financial Planner in the Isle of Man.

In March 2009 I became a local CII Council member. This year (2011/12) I'm President of Council and also chairing the 27th PFS (new) IOM Region. see www.thepfs.org for details.
My main goal is to drive forward professionalism within the IFA community and encourage implementation of the (sensible parts of) RDR, TCF and CAR initiatives in the UK in the Island. eg We still do not have commission disclosure in the Isle of Man but all that changes from 1.1.2012 when the IOM FSC have said it will be compulsory. They have also said all advisers must be level 4 qualified by 31.12.13, no grandfathering and endorse the membership of a recognised professional body to obtain the necessary Statement of Professional Standing (SPS).

In October 2009 with a number of other locally based IFAs we formed a trade association (www.fpiba.com) which is more of a lobby group. Part of my role is to liaise with our regulator; the IOM FSC, and although I can't say I agree with other members on everything, see above paragraph to see that reasonable progess has been made.

I am married to Julian with son, Luke (4). Interests include cycling, ski-ing and social media (these days). I competed for the Isle of Man as a cyclist in the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and was successful in several Natwest Island Games. I have served as a member of the Isle of Man Sports Council since 2000, and currently also serve on the Isle of Man Sport Aid sub-committee where we are constantly on the lookout for our next Mark Cavendish!
